FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Who can apply for funds?
Anyone in the community can apply for funds for a program in any of MUSD's schools. The proposal must have the signature approval of the administrator of that school and be approved as a priority for funding by the school site and then is subject to MUSE trustee approval.

Is a donation to MUSE tax deductible?
Because MUSE is a 501 (c3) organization any donation is tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.

How are MUSE trustees chosen?
Each summer current MUSE trustees meet to evaluate the success of the previous school year and to set goals for the coming year. At that time, new trustees are chosen. The bylaws of the organization allow for up to 15 members. MUSE tries to have a balance of parents, staff, and community members but encourages all who are interested to attend all meetings.

What percentage of funds raised goes directly to programs for students? 100% of MUSE funds raised goes directly to programs to benefit students of MUSD

Are there other sources of funding available? School districts in California have the majority of their funds in restricted funds called categorical funds. MUSE has no restrictions so funds can be used in any way deemed necessary. MUSE works very closely with SSC (school site council) at each school, in many cases, pooling resources for larger projects. Some of the grant recipients have used MUSE funds as seed money to apply for other grants and we recently worked with our local Rotary chapter to fund a large project to refurbish the running track used by the schools as well as the community.
